“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
(Jeremiah 29:11)
Home! There is something about home that is engrained in each of us. If we’re out in the elements and it’s raining or snowing, our thoughts naturally turn to reaching home, getting our comfortable pajamas and slippers on, and sitting down in our overstuffed chair with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Home beckons us. We name stores after it. Home Depot, Home Goods, At Home. We name movies after it. Home Alone, Sweet Home Alabama, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. There is something about the thought of being home that tugs at our hearts.
God is writing the story of our life. Did you know that? It began before we were even born. “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16) And so, our story began! Every cry we uttered as a baby. Every knee we skinned as a child. Every time a boy broke our heart. Every time we squealed in excitement. Every tear that ran down our cheek. All our life experiences are filling the pages of God’s story for us. The title page. The table of contents. The forward. The acknowledgements. The glossary. Every page is God’s biography written and designed specifically for us and about us.
The best part of our story started when we received Jesus Christ as our Savior. From that point on, our story got very interesting. The development of our spiritual growth. The excitement of learning God’s word. God’s truth stretching our minds. God’s love expanding our hearts. Every development of our spiritual being carefully etched by God into our personal profile.
We are now in the middle of our story. God’s story about us is intentional and purposeful. Each of our stories may be different, but the end will be the same. For the end of our story will actually be the best part of our story. It is the best part that will never end. For you see, the objective of the story God is writing about us, is to get us home. God has created us with a desire for our eternal home. That is why we should not try to write our own story. We need to let the Author carefully compose and script every detail of our life story, for only he can complete our story. Only he can get us home safely.
As we begin a new year, let’s promise to lay down our pens and pencils. Let’s make a commitment to God to stop trying to make our story an autobiography. Let’s learn to rest in God, allowing him to develop and complete our story – and get us home safely.
