“He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form.” (Philippians 2:7)
This is my Christmas blog. It is a recycled blog I originally wrote for Christmas 2017. I have done some tweaking to it. I’m using it because it is one of those blogs that has found a resting place in my head, as well as my heart, so I thought it was worth sharing once again:
Before Jesus Christ left his home in heaven; before he wrapped himself in human flesh; before he descended as a sperm into the womb of Mary, he knew exactly what was awaiting him on planet earth. He knew he would become a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He knew every malicious, spiteful, unkind name his creation would call him. He knew some would see him as crazy. Others as demon-possessed. He knew every slanderous, blasphemous word his ears would hear. He knew every humiliating moment he would have to endure. He knew he would not be believed or respected. He knew he would be spit upon. He knew the pain and agony of every stripe that would rip across his back, tearing at his flesh. He knew the torture the nails would bring when he was on the cross. He knew every drop of blood he would need to shed for our sins. He knew it all. All the mayhem and misery. All the distress and despair. All the affliction and adversity.
At any given moment between heaven and the manger, Jesus Christ could have turned around and gone back. He could have said no to the humiliation. He could have said no to all the pain and suffering. He could have said no to the cross – but he didn’t. In spite of it all, his love for us as his driving passion, he kept coming. And I am so grateful that he did!
Celebrate Christ this Christmas,
Darlene
