Out of curiosity I googled the question “why do we exist.” I found many explanations that attempted to explain why we exist as human beings. But on one website the answer was this, “it is an indisputable fact that no one on this planet knows why we exist.” Boy, are they wrong!
Why we exist has always been difficult for many to figure out. No matter how you answer the question of our existence, I can tell you this – we do not exist for ourselves. The Bible begins by telling us, “in the beginning, God….” Those are four powerful words. These four words tell us not only why we exist, but also why the entire world exists, and has for a few thousand years. Everything, every piece of ground, every plant and planet, every animal of every sort, and every human being has been created by God and for God. Everything was designed to function for God’s propose and plan, which would ultimately lead to his glory.
Now that truth should hit us smack alongside the head. We were not created to live independent, self-directed lives. That means everything is not about us – it is all about God. Talk about being put in our place!
Glorifying God rather than ourselves is something that is not natural for us to do. To live for the glory of God is difficult. Oh sure, we can think about glorifying God when we go to church, or in a Bible study, or when we are praying. The struggle comes when we’re not doing something that has any religious content to it. Like when we’re cleaning the house, out shopping, driving on the highway with all those idiots. Or how about when we’re exasperated with others? These are the times when our thoughts and desires can easily become distracted from glorifying God. In fact, do we even think anything about God when these everyday occurrences are happening?
Glorifying God with our entire life, including our words and thoughts, is a struggle for all of us. It is easy at times for us to lose sight of God’s existence in our lives, let alone his glory! God knew that in our sin we would never be able to always live for his glory. That is exactly why he sent his Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Jesus didn’t just die so we could be forgiven. He also died so he could live the life through us that would glorify his Father. He gives us the grace we need to live for God’s glory, and not our own glory. Today is a great time for us to begin allowing that grace to change who we live for.
