“But the word of the Lord endures forever.” (I Peter 1:25)
Ever notice things don’t last as long as they used to? When my mother-in-law passed away, her refrigerator was somewhere around forty-five years – and still running! I kid you not! Our washing machine is about to go. We know that because every time we use it at the final spin stage it sounds like a jet revving up, about to take off. We’re waiting for it to sail through the laundry room wall. I think it’s only about twelve years old.
I did a little research. Did you know that the average cell phone lasts about three years? Computers stay functioning at their capacity for about five to eight years. TV’s life span is about five years. Most appliances work for ten to fifteen years, then usually go to the appliance graveyard. After reading the stats, I am amazed that only by God’s grace is anything in our house working!
But there is one thing that breaks all the rules and statistics for endurance. One thing that never changes, never breaks down, and never needs a repairman. That is the Word of God. Thousands of years old; yet whenever it has been read over the centuries, it remains constant and relevant for whatever is going on in the world. Whatever you read in the newspaper yesterday is already old news. But the bible is as new and fresh today as it was when you parents or grandparents – or even your great grandparents – scanned its’ pages.
So, in light of that – what should we be spending our time doing?
