Waiting

“Wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:14)

I find myself needing to wait for many things.  I’m sure you do also.  And like you, I really don’t like waiting.  We grow impatient waiting for people, or a phone call, or a text, or a repair man to show up.  We have gotten comfortable living in an “instant society” where there is instant rice, instant internet, Instant Pots for cooking.  We order something from Amazon and prime delivers it to our door within a day or two.  Obviously instant gratification is making us a class of impatient people, and if we are honest, each of us has to admit that we have become caught-up in the immediate, express, instant side of life.  I know I have.  How about you?

Forty plus times in scripture we are told to wait on the Lord.  Think about that!  God knows we need to be reminded several times to have faith in him while waiting.  I believe that is because our God is such a detailed God.  He is detailed in counting the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30).  He is detailed about counting our days on this earth (Job 14:5).  He is detailed about counting the stars he has created. (Psalm 147:4)  He is detailed in counting the number of tears we shed (Psalm 56:8)

Such a detailed God sets detailed times for everything.  We are told in Galatians 4:4, when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son.”  Romans 5:6 tells us at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.”

Obviously, our detailed God has a perfect time for everything.  Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”  Every promised thing God has for us is eventual……but it is not always immediate.  And because we want the immediate, we become impatient – even with God.

God invests a lot of time into everything that pertains to his children.  Perhaps the reason we don’t like to wait on God is because we’re too interested investing our time in instant gratification.
