The deciding vote

“Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him” (Psalm 115:3)

Take a deep breath, hang onto your seat, keep your arms in the car, and wait until the ride comes to a complete stop before attempting to step out of the roller coaster.  That is my advice for the mayhem, turmoil, and bedlam we will most likely experience this coming week as we await results from the presidential election.  I am sure reports will be conflicting and confusing until things settle down.  And I am equally certain that people will be sitting on the edge of their seats, biting their nails, grabbing their Xanax, and throwing up their arms in frustration.

But we who are in Christ do not need to experience the anxiety and stress the world will experience this coming week.  We not only know who is ultimately in charge, but we can be confident in the fact that the One in charge is our Father.  Take to heart Daniel 4:17, and seriously consider what it tells us. “The Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind.  And bestows it on whom he wishes.  And sets over it the lowliest of men”.  That verse is talking about our Abba Father, our Pappa.  Allow your mind to take a trip back through history.  Think about the thousands and thousands of captains, chiefs, commanders, directors, generals, governors, kings and queens, managers, potentates, presidents, principals, rulers, and supervisors, to name a few, that God has positioned in and out of authority in this world over the last six thousand plus years.  Men and women, whether anyone thought they were capable or not; whether they were humble or not; whether they were qualified or not; whether they were wise or not, whether they were popular or not.  From positions of authority they have sat on thrones, steered the helms, ruled from behind desks, and commanded armies.  It has never been about an individual’s capability.  It has always been about our Father’s sovereign will.  And this presidential election will be no different, whether we are pleased with the outcome or not.

So, as you are glued to your television, your smart phone, computer, or whatever media you choose this coming week, above all remember this:  This election is not the most crucial event on God’s agenda.  He is working toward the day when he will say to his Son, “Arise and go saddle your horse!”  No matter who has voted, why they have voted, or the way they have voted; the only vote that really matters is the deciding vote – and that vote belongs to our Father God!
