“Faith is the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1)
As I write this, we just finished three days of rain, rain, and more rain. The sun hid behind clouds that burst open and poured heavy perception on everything around us. Great for the flowers and farmers. Not so great for outdoor activities. I’m an early riser, so this morning while it was still dark, I looked out of our sunroom windows. My first thought was where did our solar lights go. There was no indication they were even in the backyard, yet I knew they were there. I just saw them yesterday. The lights were there, but all the rain and lack of sun had kept them from shining.
I think that’s what our faith in the Lord is like at times. There is a dark side to our faith that we don’t like to experience. Allow me to ask you to stop and think about something you are praying for in your life right now. You can’t see your answer. And you can’t see the Lord working in your situation. Perhaps everything looks dark to you, like you’re in a storm.
But faith in Christ tells us that even though we can’t see any movement that suggests our prayer is being answered, out there in the darkness our Lord is at work. He never stops working. He never places our prayer aside as if it had no value. He knows exactly what is needed for the rain to cease, the darkness to go away, and the sunshine of an answered prayer to break forth through the sky.
Faith is the evidence of things that are not seen. Faith does have a dark side to it. That is the side we experience when we cannot see Christ at work. It is at that time of darkness that we must have the faith to know and believe that in Jesus Christ we have the guarantee that God is working on our prayer, and he will answer it the best way he knows.
We don’t know what is best. We pray according to what we want. We do that because we are selfish and think we know what is best. But real faith is willing to trust God to answer according to what truly is best. If we are truly going to trust him when things are dark, then we need to stop telling him how to go about answering our prayer.
The rain has stopped now. The sun is out. And early tomorrow morning, I will see the light from our solar lights, and I will know that the darkness could not snuff out the light – it only hid it from me for a short while.
