Election 2024

“Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6)

Well…..the nail biting, headaches, and muscle tensions are in full swing.  I’m talking about all the stress many Americans are experiencing regarding the 2024 presidential election.  This week is the Republican National Convention.  Next month, the Democratic National Convention.  And in between all the convening, debating, interviewing, and political rallying, we are left with uncertainty, confusion, and frustration.  Are either candidate truly qualified to lead the greatest nation in the world?  Are either of them mentally and physically capable of doing so?  And now an assassination attempt on one of the candidates.  What is happening in America?  All we can do is wait.  And as we do, the world waits with us.  The President of Russia waits.  The leaders in the Middle East wait.  China waits.  The little short guy in North Korea waits.  Oh my, what will happen!

I want to give you the relief you need from all the uncertainty and chaos that this election has brought into so many of our lives.  I want you to know that you can put down the remote that has you racing from one news feed to another.  You can walk away from your smartphone and stop the obsession with your laptop.  There is one and only one piece of news that we need to hold on to, and that is – Our God is Sovereign!  “He controls the course of world events, he removes kings and sets up other kings.” (Daniel 2:21)

Stop and think a moment.  Take a look around the world.  Where is Herod Agrippa who persecuted the early church?  You don’t see Ivan the Terrible doing terrible things, do you?  What happened to Atilla the Hun, who had his own brother killed to gain power?  How about Hitler?  What happened to that evil man?  Or when was the last time you heard about Saddam Hussein invading and destroying another country?  Or our adversary Osama Bin Laden?  Who is he terrorizing now?

And what about the good leaders who have marched across the pages of history?  What happened to them?  Men like the great military leader, Alexander the Great.  Or Winston Churchill?  Or our own presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln?   Or Nelson Mandela, one of the great civil rights leaders of the 20th century?   Or a special woman like Mother Teresa, who did so much to ease suffering.

What has happened to these leaders?  Where did their evil deeds go?  Why did their good deeds come to a halt?  Our God raised them up for a season, a time, a divine purpose, a mission.  And then, he removed them and set-up others to accomplish his will.

In November you and I will go to the polls and cast our vote – but it will be God who elects the next President of the United States.  So, stop biting your nails.  Take a couple of Tylenol for the headaches and muscle tension in your neck.  Put down the cellphone and put away the laptop.  Get away from in front of the television and go out and get a hot fudge sundae.  Stop worrying and stressing over something as simple as an election.  God has got this covered!
