“His mercies begin afresh each morning” ( Lamentations 3:23)
Why do we say, “good morning”? We don’t say, “bad morning”. Or “so-so morning.” I believe we say “good morning” because we know that morning brings us a new day. A day that has the potential to be filled with new possibilities, new hope, new answers to pray that we desperately need. I believe we say “good morning” because we have an expectation that the new day will bring “good” things. It’s called hope. And each new day starts with hope.
Now, allow me to ask you a question about a new day. Which comes first, the day or the night? Most of us would say that day comes first. That night does not come until the day is over. However, God sees day and night differently than we do. When God created the separation of night and day, the bible says, “and there was evening, and there was morning.” (Genesis 1:4,8,13,19, and 23). Think about that. God’s creation of the world specifically tells us that the night leads into the day, not the day leading into the night. In fact, if you study the Jewish holidays, and every biblical day for that fact, you will discover we are told that each day begins at sunset, not sunrise.
God did that for a reason. In God’s economy the world moves from darkness to light. The first time we get a view of the earth in the bible, we are told that “darkness was over the surface of the deep” (Genesis 1:2). We are then told in verse 3 that the first thing God said was, “let there be light.” The point is that God always begins with what is dark and turns it into light. And just as that is true for the physical realm, it is also true in the spiritual realm. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12). When we have a relationship with Christ, we move from darkness into light, just as the day moves from darkness into light. Without Christ, the world exists in darkness, just as it did before the creation. And because God moves from darkness to light, therefore the lives of God’s children move from living in darkness, to living in light. We go from death to life. From living in sin to living in righteousness. From lies to truth. From being guilty to being innocent.
What a great way for us to live our lives. According to God’s order of time, he is always moving us from darkness to light. Hence, morning is the realm he wants us to always live in, in Christ. So, no matter what time you are reading this blog, allow me to say to you – “good morning!”
