Gigabytes

“Oh God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1)

Cell phones.  We can’t seem to live without them.  They give us all the information we need, from the weather to the latest info on what and who is happening in the world.  Statistics tell us that the average person looks at their cell phone ninety-six times a day. Our phones seem to be so valuable to us that we carry them with us wherever we go.  How in the world does one get anything else done!

Well, my cell phone was getting sluggish.  I had apps crashing.  My capacity for pictures was diminishing.  Obviously, I needed a new phone.  So off to the store I went.  When I arrived, I was first surprised to learn that my phone was nine years old.  How did that happen!  And as if that wasn’t enough of a surprise, I learned that my phone only had 32 gigabytes of memory.  No wonder I had problems!  So, I purchased a new phone with a lot more gigabytes.  I have arrived at an upgraded digital age!

My cell phone encounter made me begin to wonder about the capacity I have for God.  Something we all need to think about.  I wonder if we don’t know God any greater than we do because we limit our capacity for him, by filling our minds and lives with trivia, irrelevant information, and untruths.  I wonder how much time in a single day we spend searching the internet and not searching for a deeper understanding of who our God is.  I wonder if our thirst for God is depleted because we have such a thirst for the world.

It’s time to stop and ask ourselves some serious questions.  Questions like, do I seek to know God deeper and more diligently?  Do I daily study and meditate on his word and his ways?  Do I give him my undivided attention in fervent prayer?  Is my capacity for God greater now than it was one year ago?

I can only imagine the amount of gigabytes we would have if our soul had gigabytes.  How great is our capacity for God?  David in Psalm 63 wrote that his soul thirsted for God.  Does our soul thirst for Him?  Are we in the kind of relationship with God where we long for all the nourishment he has for us?

I’m glad my new phone has more gigabytes for me to use.  I just can’t help but ask myself if I have a great capacity for God in me so that he can use me.  How about you?
